Cherry Blossom Dreams
This is my experience of the Cherry Blossoms at High Park – a cherry blossoms cream
Spring time is dreamy, when the Cherry Blossom Bloom in Toronto
Magic is in the air every spring, at the High Park gardens in Toronto. All 2000 of the cherry blossom trees bloom in late April (or early May, depending on the spring temperatures) for just a few days.
Capture the ephemeral Cherry Blossoms
It is but a brief moment in time for these delicate flowers. Gifted to Toronto in 1959, Japanese ambassador to Canada, Toru Hagiwara, they are truly the gift that keeps on giving.

Walking down cherry blossom avenue, in Toronto’s biggest public park, during the week of these evanescent blooms, you are immersed in a fairytale of colours and shimmering light.
Sunset is the best time to capture their beauty
Best time of day to capture the dreamy, soft quality of these gentle floral scapes is 1-2 hours before sunset. In early May that is between 6-7:30pm.

Tips for the best floral sunset shoot:
- arrive at least 2 hours before sunset
- walk the area you wish to photograph
- make notes of your favourite areas
- watch the light change for a few minutes at a time
- test out a few spots to explore sight lines
- note high and low traffic areas for people walking in your sight lines
- shoot several shots in the same spot, since light is changing quickly
- shoot closeups and wide landscape to play around with the changing light

Flower & Plant Tips
Golden Hour Sweet Spot:
The “golden hour” for flowers is the last 30-45 minutes before the sun dips below the horizon
Embrace Silhouettes: If the plants have interesting shapes focus on their form rather than colors.
