Old Red truck and Daisy
Sturdy but forgotten, the Old Red truck, not much red left anymore, sat parked by a bright white and yellow Daisy. Daisy was young, happy, vibrant – everything the Old Red Truck was not. She woke up smiling.
That’s what Daisy was: a smiling ray of sunshine.

She couldn’t remember the place she lived last year. Each spring, she took in a new field called home. The Old Red Truck had been in this field for years. Well, eons really. He lost track.

Old Red waited.
Let’s call him Old Red. He knew he was old but for years, his spirits were high. One day, he thought, one day someone will come along and fix me up good. No one came. Those days of faith were long gone.

As the years wore on, so did he. The weather was tough on him. With no cleaning and no shelter, there was not much hope for him. Decades passed and he resigned himself to wait until there were only rusty scraps left of him in a heap.
Daisy rose up out of nowhere.
She was a ray of sunshine. Where did she come from? He had never seen such splendid joy and happiness around him.
She radiated warmth and greeted the sun with a fervent cheer. He could feel her warmth in the late summer afternoons.

Daisy became quite dear to Old Red.
He felt protective of her. She was small, after all. Of course, he didn’t know that a field Daisy is mighty. Daisy was happy day in and day out. And, only truly struggled when the fierce rain storms came down the mountains. But, that was not too often. During the downpours, she folded in her petals as tightly as she could. She learned that from her Daisy friends.
Some fields from her past wanderings were full of daisies. She loved those the best.

On gentle breezy days, Old Red was almost, almost happy.
Whenever the wind blew softly from the north, Daisy would bend back toward him and it sent a jolt of her joy through his entire chassis. Those were Old Red’s favourite days. Who knew he would make a friend in such a state, in such a late season of his life. His faith was growing day by day, breeze by breeze.
Old Red looked forward to waking up each day, with Daisy by his side. Finally, he thought, I am not alone.
He stood as tall and strong as he could, imagining that surely, she was slowly growing dependent on him. He wanted to be there for her. They could be like this for years to come, he mused.

Old Red only new about trucks.
Since Old Red had only been around trucks for most of his active life, he didn’t know much about flowers. He didn’t know that Daisy was a free spirit. Her life was lived in seasons and not decades. Daisy was a bright and happy camper wherever she found herself. She lost track of all the places she had taken root. As long as there was warm sunshine, she was in her element.

One day, summer turned to fall and Old Red learned about flowers.
